Dear Ms. Davidow,
I am writing to introduce myself to you and give you an idea of my background, interests, motivations, and aspirations. This is my first year at City College, and I am looking forward to learning as much as I can about Writing for Engineering.
I was born and raised in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital. Living in a big city as a lower-middle-class family was difficult at times. Even as a child, I remember thinking of things I could do to ease the load on my parents a bit. In 2010, my family moved to New York in search of better opportunities. This move was exciting because I knew I would get a world-class education and personal and professional experiences in the US. At first, New York was intimidating. My English was only passable, and the cultural and linguistic diversity was nothing like I had experienced before. It took me a long time to feel like I belonged, but eventually, I made friends and made this city my home. In addition to my native Bengali, I can speak fluent English.
My most meaningful experience was when our primary school computer club visited the US embassy in Dhaka. I barely remember all the jargon our speaker used, but I recall how fascinated I was with the technological infrastructure and the skill the people there seemed to possess. This experience helped pave the way for the interests I have today.
My favorite subjects in school were mathematics and physics. I loved sciences in high school, and naturally, I performed better at them than in languages and humanities. I was also interested in astronomy and art, although I considered these hobbies more than academic disciplines. During my free time, I attempted to learn painting and how to play the guitar. My skills in these two areas are basic, but I appreciate that I can use them to unwind from time to time. My love for sciences has grown even stronger as I am deeply passionate about technology, specifically computers and software.
I chose engineering to gain the skill set that I need in the field of technology. It will help me gain the scientific principles I need to build and understand machines and structures. Engineering is one of the subjects I need to ensure a great career. I am particularly interested in data structures and computer networks, and security.
My ultimate dream for the future is to become an FBI cybersecurity analyst. When I was younger, all I knew was that “when I grow up, I want to play with computers all day.” Growing up and moving to the US clarified my dream. There is nothing that I would love more than protecting this country from cyber threats from within and outside.
My goal for this semester is to make writing a top priority and learn how to write for specific groups of people. I consider myself a decent writer, but only when writing for a general audience. I want to learn how to communicate in scientific and industry-specific terms while remaining clear and concise. I also want to grow other skills such as presentation skills and professionalism. I believe this class will lay the foundation to help me realize these goals.
Sincerely,
Tasfia Rahman
